FUCK PW
A receipts-based audit of Physics Wallah. On YouTube, education was free. On the app, it's a subscription. At the refund desk, it's an upgrade. This site keeps the receipts.

01: the thesis
Three versions of one company
What they say
"I don't want any profits in return. Quality Education should be free for Every kid of India", Alakh Pandey told the Prime Minister, 15 Aug 20266. Earlier: "quality education at a democratic price"6; "PhysicsWallah will never become business wallah"34; "every penny spent at PW will be spent for student welfare"7. He admits the pivot himself: the free era gave way to "a marginal amount of money"7.
02: receipt № 001
Class 9 poster. Class 10 bill.
One student's account, told in order: our editor's own purchase, reconstructed from support chats and mail. First-person, not our claim about intent.
-
night
The poster said Class 9. Scrolling batch posters in the PW app. A poster advertising a Class 9 course. Tapped it.
-
night
The checkout sold Class 10. The buy page that opened was a Class 10 course. Poster and checkout didn't match. In a hurry, they paid anyway.
-
late night
The realization. That night it clicked: wrong class. They wrote to support to swap. Support does not reply at night. Silence.
-
next morning
The morning mail. A mail arrived: refund wouldn't be processed. Policy, they said.
-
next day
The lateral swap that couldn't happen. Both courses cost the same. A class-for-class swap at identical price? Not offered. The only move on the table was upward: buy a costlier batch with add-ons a Class 9 student never asked for, pay roughly ₹500 more.
So: bug or dark pattern? A Class 9 poster selling Class 10, once, could be a bug. But here is what the record adds. This is the company the consumer regulator fined for dark patterns3, and PW's own written policy permits a swap to "another batch of the same amount within 10 days"1. The desk's "upgrade only" answer wasn't even their own policy.
Receipt № 002: the fine print, verbatim
- "When you buy our products/services, your purchase is not entitled for any refund."1 A blanket quote, on their own page.
- "If you purchase any batch by mistake, you can request to change it to another batch of the same amount within 10 days of the purchase."1 The class-for-class swap our editor asked for? It's in their contract. They just don't honor it at the desk.
- PW-owned Edutoos, same house, goes further: "Change of course… If there is any difference in the cost, then the student needs to pay the differential amount. In case, the cost is less then there will be no refund for the same."45 Downgrades are simply confiscated.
The pattern, from the public record
- "I accidentally purchased the Arjuna batch… At the time of purchase, both batches were priced at ₹4,999. Now when I am requesting support it shows Lakshya is showing a higher price… Now they are not replying." Reddit, June 202627.
- "…their agent told me to first buy the new batch and apply refund, which I did. Now I am waiting… they are not answering email or message." Voxya complaint, June 202326.
- J&K consumer commission, Mar 2026: ₹35,000 paid, batch access never granted, refund refused. Ordered ₹35,000 + ₹50,000 for academic loss + ₹10,000 costs. PW did not appear5.
- PW's own DRHP: complaints/queries up from 7.4 lakh to 10 lakh in a year; batch dropouts up 58% to 46,019; refund payouts ₹26 cr (+13%)19.
03: the numbers
Follow the crores
Straight from the UDRHP/RHP coverage, exchange data and screener, each figure footnoted. Loss-heavy years include non-cash ESOP/CCPS charges; we print both facts9.
FY22 standalone profit was ₹98 cr33. The consolidated record never again shows profit. Q1 FY27 reopened at −₹88 cr16; standalone losses of just −₹23 cr mean the subsidiaries (Xylem, Utkarsh, the Gulf arm) carry the bleed16.
Lock-in math: 50% of the anchor book unlocked Dec 14 2025, the rest Feb 12 2026; ~26 crore pre-IPO shares (≈₹2,949 cr) freed May 18 2026. The supply waves rode while the price fell13. The promoter-side 18-month lock runs to ~May 202713.
| Target | When | Consideration | Footnote |
|---|---|---|---|
| iNeuron Intelligence | Dec 2022 | ~₹250 cr (upskilling rollout as PW Skills) | 15 |
| Xylem Learning (Kerala) | 2023 → Dec 2025 | ~₹500 cr plan; staged buy-up to 77.27% (₹122.9 cr last tranche) | 10 |
| Utkarsh Classes (Jodhpur) | 2024 → 2026 | staged to 75.5%; 100% targeted by Mar 2028 | 10 |
| Sarrthi IAS | 2025 → Aug 2026 | 51% control; ₹71.8 cr second tranche | 10 |
| Drishti IAS | Called off Jun 2025 | would have been ₹2,500–3,000 cr | 10 |
The IPO prospectus earmarks the rest of the fresh money to buy more companies10. After three years of materially negative consolidated profit, the strategy is: raise, advertise, acquire. And the ad money compounds: FY25 spent ₹276 cr on ads; the IPO reserves ₹710 cr more910.
04: the funnel
Free until it isn't
"We build communities over social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook… and then we monetise them through our app. We have not found the need to spend exorbitant amounts on marketing and advertising." Prateek Maheshwari, co-founder, Business Today, 11 Sep 20238
That is the model in PW's own words. The filings quantify the top of the funnel: 207 YouTube channels, 98.8M subscribers, 22.85 billion cumulative views (DRHP, June 2025)20. The mechanics are on their own product pages: batches launch as "First Class FREE on YouTube"20, free "series" batches sit one click away from paid ones (Neev Free Series next to NEEV 2027)24. The syllabus behind the demo is the subscription. As for "we have not found the need": FY25 ads alone were ₹276 cr (+41%), and the IPO reserves ₹710 cr more910.
| What the ad buys you | Tier seen | Price shown |
|---|---|---|
| NEEV 2027 (Class 9) / Udaan 2027 (Class 10) | Regular | ₹2,200 (MRP shown ₹4,500) |
| Lakshya NEET 2027 | Offer tier | ₹4,800 |
| UPSC Prarambh 2.0 | Early-bird | ₹24,999 |
| Udaan Power Batch 2027 | Top tier | ₹45,518/yr (₹54,999 total) |
| Lakshya Power Batch JEE 2027 | Top tier | ₹59,003 (MRP shown ₹91,231) |
The affordability story that starts at ₹2,200 ends at ₹59,003 behind a ₹91,231 strikethrough: the same brand selling the "expensive coaching" bracket it campaigns against22. Offline Vidyapeeth is a further bracket entirely10.
The math they never show (ESTIMATE: an opinion model, labeled as such)
Their 22.85B cumulative views carry Indian education-tier ad rates of roughly ₹60–₹180 per 1,000 views25, which values the whole free catalogue at ≈ ₹140–410 crore of lifetime ad value. Compare: ₹2,887 cr FY25 revenue and the ₹710 cr IPO marketing earmark20. So no, the numbers don't say YouTube ads alone could fund every batch free-of-cost. They say a company that marketed "free" could fund entire free batches with a fraction of its marketing budget. That asymmetry is the criticism: it isn't economics that keeps the syllabus behind the paywall, it's the funnel.
Say exactly what they'd say back
"Our courses start from between Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000… they charge anywhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 1 lakh for the same product category. We could have done the same or charged relatively less than them, but me and Prateek always wanted to create for the 80 per cent…" Pandey8. "Offline is expensive; when our students complain, I tell them that we have not shut down online classes"8. Credit where it's due: ₹2,200–₹4,800 online beats the ₹1L-bracket incumbents by a mile. The critique begins where the under-₹5,000 story meets the ₹59,003 Power Batch, and where "we have not shut down online classes" is the defense for a ₹35,000 batch whose access was never granted5.

They noticed too
Short, attributed quotes from the public record with links. Reddit text is verbatim from the public Arctic Shift archive; private complainants anonymized. Opinions quoted are the posters' own, marked "as posted".
"I believe in this community and i hope you guys will help me with stopping this Kota scam… It feels like a being a part of cult, and then realising it's a cult."
"Physics Wallah has basically turned into Irrelevant Wallah now… someone needs to tell them that 70–80% of those questions go straight over students' heads."
"An opaque process was followed in the name of performance review. We were never informed about the metrics used to evaluate us."
"The centre heads let go of teachers at their whim and fancy. You have to be in their good books or else tomorrow you won't have jobs."
"PhysicsWallah has a unique risk / Source: Company DRHP."
"It's the best online coaching in India… It indeed created a revolution by allowing the aspirations from the poorer backgrounds get quality education. What we don't like about pw is it's fanboys."
Exhibit A: the teacher ledger
- Mar 2023: star teachers Tarun Kumar, Manish Dubey, Sarvesh Dixit resign over "the company's atmosphere" and leave to found Sankalp Bharat. PW-linked teachers counter-allege ₹5 crore rival bribes. PW declines to comment41.
- Nov–Dec 2023: 70–120 employees laid off "for performance reasons" (ToI/NDTV)18. Mid-2025: ~20 more departures; "Mutual Separation" mails; ex-staff allege one month's severance against two promised19.
- Faculty attrition disclosed in PW's own DRHP: 18% FY23 → 40.4% FY24 → 26% FY25. The Hindu documents "silent terminations" surfacing right before the IPO18.
- Teachers can be voted out; pay terms ride on student ratings they get no say in, per Inc42's review of PW's teacher-rating machinery19.
- The employee-side ratings tell their own version of the story: 3.6/5 across ~3.4k AmbitionBox reviews46; ~1.2k Glassdoor reviews leave work-life balance at 3.6/5 (Aug 2026)18.
Exhibit B: the quality desk
- The Ken, Apr 2025: "Physics Wallah's Rs 15 lakh 'BTech' comes without a BTech degree." At least 30 students of the 2023 IOI batch dropped out "citing chaos in the system and unkept promises"35.
- PW's own DRHP admits iNeuron, the ~₹250 cr acquisition15, "does not have any active business operations or employees"36.
- Oct 2025: the "PW Pi OTT box" pitched as an "AI box" turns out to be a Raspberry Pi in a case. The roast-cycle thread on r/IndiaTech logged 6,283 points, as posted39.
- May 2026: PW's NBFC arm FinZ Finance starts lending to students, ₹500 penalty per missed EMI. MediaNama asked aloud whether this is a "BYJU'S-style debt trap"42.
- Aggregate scores, 21 Oct 2026: PW's own footer advertises a "4.8 rating"48; live trackers logged 4.55★ over 1.42M Play ratings31 and 4.3★ on the App Store35. Versus Trustpilot 1.9–2.3/528, MouthShut 1.22/529. Selection bias runs both ways; the complaint content (refunds, loans, support) is the same in both buckets.
Exhibit C: the IPO's own meme economy
- Day-1 subscription was 0.06x; final 1.81x2110. Within ~70 days the stock fell below issue price, and the "Byjus 2.0" jokes followed the −52% slide13.
- Nov 13, 2025, r/IndianStreetBets (608 points): screenshots circulating of alleged influencer DMs; "some FinFluEnZas have already posted content following the exact same script shown in the screenshots." An allegation with a documented evidence trail, no PW denial found. Labeled as allegation40.
- Alakh's listing-day line: "There's an Einstein in India who is selling tea on the roads of Bihar… a Madam Curie… selling momos" went everywhere44. The same week, PW's DRHP priced ₹710 cr of fresh issue money toward commercials10.
06: the alternative
What a real free PW looks like
- Teach the batch, don't trailer it. The first class is the ad; the syllabus is the product20. 207 channels, 22.85B views: the distribution already exists20. Bright at ₹60–180 ad RPM, the ads budget (₹276 cr FY25, ₹710 cr earmark) would bankroll whole free batches25. They choose the funnel. Choose the audience instead.
- Lateral swaps, honored in writing. Their ToS already promises swaps to "another batch of the same amount within 10 days"1. Start doing what your own contract says: class-for-class, price-for-price, no "upgrade" theater.
- A refund window that exists. "Not entitled for any refund"1 is not a policy, it's a trapdoor. Days, any reason, self-serve.
- Support that answers at night. Students study at night, and so do buy pages. "No, not right now"2 is not an SLA.
- Posters that match checkout. Class on the poster = class in the cart. And no pre-ticked boxes: the regulator already made that one law for them3.
07: the tip line
Send a receipt
PW's refund desk never opens. Ours does. Tell us what they did, with whatever proof you have: screenshots, mails, order IDs. An editor checks every submission against the record and publishes only the verified ones, anonymized on request. Nothing goes up on this page unchecked.
Prefer mail? Write straight to refund@letsfuck.pw. Not a typo. The only refund that actually goes through on this whole internet is the kind that comes back to our inbox.

How this audit stays fair
Sources or it didn't happen
Every factual claim above carries a numbered link to a primary document (ToS, consumer orders, the CCPA order, filings) or dated reporting. The unverifiable rumors in the research pile were cut, not printed. Opinions and estimates are labeled as ours.
People, not pawns
Founder, teachers, staff: named only for publicly documented business conduct. No private lives, no fan-war fees, no harassment. The company's choices, the paywall, the refund desk, the products, are the target. PW has sued a competitor over a nickname (and won an injunction against "Sasta Wallah"47); we answer names with sources, not nicknames.
Corrections, fast and public
Disagree with a receipt? Send the primary source and we'll correct it visibly, dated. First-person stories are labeled first-person. Everything on this page links back to its record.
